In a groundbreaking step toward enhancing coastal security and safeguarding the lives of fishermen, Shri Kota Srinivas Poojary, the Fisheries Minister, unveiled the Kadalu App on November 13, 2020, at the Panjar Krishi Karyagara (Panjar Farm Workshop) in Moodukudru, near Kalyanpura, Malpe. This significant launch marks a major leap forward in protecting the fishing community and acknowledging their vital contributions to our coastal economy.
During the event, Shri Kota Srinivas Poojary emphasized the significance of this initiative. He shared,
“When natural disasters strike, we face the challenge of not knowing how many boats and fishermen are at sea. With this app, we aim to ensure that we can track the movements of fishing boats and offer assistance when they are in distress.”
The Kadalu App has been developed in collaboration with the Fisheries Department and the Coastal Security Police (CSP). It aims to address a critical challenge faced by coastal regions: the ability to track fishing boats and fishermen during natural calamities like hurricanes and tsunamis.
In such emergencies, the whereabouts of fishing boats and their crew often remain unknown, complicating rescue operations. The Kadalu App bridges this gap by providing real-time information, enabling efficient and coordinated rescue efforts.
The Kadalu App’s functionalities extend beyond disaster management. CSP Superintendent of Police, Chethan R., explained that the app allows authorities to access detailed information about each fishing boat and its crew by simply entering the boat number.
This feature will be crucial during routine coastal inspections and in emergencies, allowing authorities to respond swiftly and effectively.
Additionally, the Kadalu App will be continuously improved. Future updates will include:
These updates will be developed with the support of the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), ensuring that fishermen are equipped with accurate data to improve both their safety and livelihoods.
The event was graced by several notable dignitaries, including:
The launch of the Kadalu App is a testament to the power of technology and collaboration in addressing the challenges faced by the fishing community. This visionary initiative reflects a deep commitment to the welfare of fishermen, who are the backbone of our coastal economy.
With the Kadalu App, we are embarking on a new chapter of safety, security, and prosperity for those who make their living from the sea. This app not only empowers fishermen but also strengthens the bond between technology, governance, and the community, ensuring a brighter and safer future for all.
